Seed and Grain Testing, Assessor and Interval Monitoring
Parkland Laboratories conduct germination and purity tests, including GB grading, on cereal, oilseed and pulse crop kinds listed in Grade Tables I to Vll of the Canada Seeds Act, and germination testing on vegetables and herbs in Grade Tables XVI to XX. These crops represent about 95% of the acreage planted to crops each year in western Canada.
Parkland Labs also conduct a number of advisory tests on seed samples. These include seed vigor, seed viability, 1000 kernel weight and various diseases including Fusarium head blight infection. On malting barley, germination energy and germination potential (3-day and 5-day germination tests) and water sensitivity determinations are done in accordance with industry procedures. Other tests conducted on grain samples include sprouting damage (Hagberg Falling Number), bushel weight, moisture and protein.
